HANA Lifecycle Management

HANA Lifecycle Management is about installing, updating and managing SAP HANA components and XSA applications to ensure their continuous performance and up-to-dateness within the IT infrastructure. In this article, we take a detailed look at the two main aspects: HANA Platform Lifecycle Management and Application Lifecycle Management.

HANA Platform Lifecycle Management

aboutSAP HANA Platform Lifecycle Management includes the installation and update of an SAP HANA server, mandatory components as well as additional modules and their post-configuration. These processes are crucial to ensure that your SAP HANA system is optimally integrated into your IT landscape and remains up to date.
toolsThe platform lifecycle management aspects of your SAP HANA system are customized via three user interfaces:
Graphical user interface (GUI)
Command line interface (CLI)
Web user interface (Web UI)
These are available in various environments, such as SAP HANA Studio or SAP HANA Cockpit.
system configurationThe SAP HANA Database Lifecycle Manager (HDBLCM) integrates several system configuration functions, such as:
Initial platform configuration: integration into the landscape by registering in the System Landscape Directory (SLD) and configuring inter-service communication.
Topology customization: Adding or removing SAP HANA hosts.
System reconfiguration: changing system parameters, adapting system identifiers, moving the system to new hardware or converting it to a multitenant database system.
administrationThe HDBLCM can be used to carry out the following management activities:
Configuration of a multi-host system
Integration of new hosts or removal of existing hosts
Establishing a connection to the System Landscape Directory (SLD)
Changing the system identifiers and host names
Relocation of the system to new hardware

Application Lifecycle Management

aboutSAP HANA Application Lifecycle Management supports all phases of the lifecycle of an SAP HANA application or add-on. From the modeling of your product structure, through development and transport, to the installation and updating of downloaded or self-created products.
toolsThese aspects of lifecycle management are accessible via various interfaces:
Web browser (SAP HANA XS application)
Command line tool hdbalm
SAP HANA Studio and SAP HANA Cockpit
ALM Phases Modeling: Definition of the product structure for efficient software development. Creation of metadata, repository packages and assignment to delivery units.
Development: Software development in repository packages with change tracking for managing and transporting changes.
Transport: Different transport types, such as native SAP HANA transports or the Change and Transport System (CTS), depending on requirements.
Compilation: Creation of add-ons and products based on the developed software and the defined metadata.
Installation: Installation of downloaded or self-created add-ons and software components.
administrationSystem administrators mainly use Application Lifecycle Management to install and update SAP HANA applications or add-on products. These tasks are documented in the SAP HANA Administration Guide.
