HANA Migration

HANA migration is the process of switching to the SAP HANA platform using operating systems such as SUSE Enterprise Linux or RedHat Enterprise Linux for SAP solutions. The Software Update Manager (SUM) with the Database Migration Option (DMO) is used to ensure an efficient and secure transfer of existing databases to the SAP HANA environment. The migration to SAP HANA offers companies numerous advantages, including increased agility, competitiveness and the use of the cloud. By selecting the right platform, using suitable migration tools and leveraging IT automation, the migration process can be made efficient and secure. With the Self-Service Migration Tool and the Database Migration Option of the Software Update Manager, powerful tools are available to ensure a successful migration to SAP HANA.

Why migrate to SAP HANA?SAP HANA runs exclusively on the Linux operating system, which means that companies currently using other operating systems will not only have to migrate their ERP system, but also switch to Linux. Linux provides SAP HANA and SAP S/4HANA with a solid foundation for stability, performance, security, flexibility and availability at scale. The mandatory migration to SAP HANA and SAP S/4HANA by 2027 helps companies to become more agile and competitive. This migration supports modernization and opens up new opportunities to take advantage of the cloud and drive digitalization. However, challenges can arise during the migration to SAP S/4HANA, especially with custom program code. As SAP S/4HANA is a completely new product version, existing custom processes may not be compatible with the new environment. This complexity could explain why, according to a study in May 2022, only 29% of SAP customers have already migrated to SAP S/4HANA, while 16% have no migration plans.
On-Premise to HANA Cloud MigrationThe migration of an SAP HANA database to SAP HANA Cloud can be carried out using the Self-Service Migration Tool. SAP HANA database instances can be created and managed in SAP HANA Cloud Central. You can also use the command line interface (CLI) to create and manage SAP HANA Cloud instances. The migration requires a dedicated user in your SAP HANA source database. A connection between the source database and the Self-Service Migration Tool must be established for the migration. This can be done either via the Cloud Connector or via a direct connection. The Connectivity Service Entitlement must be activated within your subaccount with the connectivity_proxy service plan. The Cloud Connector must be installed and configured on your SAP HANA on-premise database.
The Self-Service Migration Tool guides you through various migration phases: Planning, Preparation, Execution, Validation and Finalization. The migration must be completed within 60 days, otherwise it will be automatically archived. Some migration tasks are not supported by the Self-Service Migration Tool and must be carried out manually.
OracleDB to SAP HANA MigrationThe Database Migration Option (DMO) of the Software Update Manager (SUM) combines the software update with the database migration. This option enables simple database migration without software updates and supports migration to SAP HANA DB and other database types. DMO processing is based on the shadow system functionality of SUM. The tool creates the shadow repository on the target database until the downtime phase, while the SAP HANA database is set up in parallel. Once the database connection to the target database has been changed, the downtime begins, during which the migration data is converted and imported.
The R3load tools are used to migrate the application data and offer fast processing as no dump files need to be created. To optimize performance during the migration, performance optimizations such as “Uptime Migration” should be used to reduce downtime.
